Grace and Sleep - Part Two

Sleep:

Now let’s talk about gift #2, sleep.  It’s really pretty simple. Most of us aren’t getting enough of it, and all of us would like to have more.  I know that sleep can be a complicated subject for many people.  Especially since the days keep getting shorter and shorter, right?  It’s just not possible to get everything done and do everything we want to do in the day.  24 hours is just not long enough.  The world is spinning faster and faster, there’s so much information out there, and we don’t want to miss anything, and we don’t want to let anyone down.

We are girl-boss powerhouses, mothers, business owners, successful professionals, and master jugglers.  Burning the candle at both ends is so old-fashioned, so we pretend that we are in Vegas, baby!  We are on 24/7, and some of us even wear that badge like we just won first prize in a beauty pageant.

Some of us are pretty good at covering up our exhaustion.  Others of us, not so much.  I happen to be someone who does not do well, at all, when I am sleep deprived.  I am irritable, snappy, and emotional when I am tired.  If tiredness turns into exhaustion...well, that is when I am pretty darn certain that life as I knew it will never return.  Everything is a big deal.  I lose my ability to make even the smallest decisions (like what socks I want to wear today), my productivity takes a nose-dive, I start craving sweets and forgetting to eat lunch, and worst of all my creativity disappears and I lose my ability to be present in the moment.

I lose touch with myself and what is really important to me.

I can’t tap into Source and my intuition.

I’m doing everything, but I’m feeling nothing.

Have you been there?  Maybe I’m describing you to a T right this moment.  There is a 100% chance that one of these questions is true for you.  Chances are that you’ve been cycling through either having just been there and being there right now.  We all do it.

I want to be to the point right now so that I can help you in an efficient matter to really understand the significance of this gift called sleep.  And I do really want you to think of it as a gift and a blessing because in thinking about this, or anything else for that matter, in this way, it eliminates the guilt and the need for permission that we as women so often predicate our needs on.  Gifts are gifts, things we bless others and ourselves with.  We give them freely and joyfully, and it feels good, right?  So do that.

Science shows us that people who get 8-9 hours of sleep every night are 30% more productive in their daily tasks and score 30% higher on cognitive testing.  Blah, blah, blah, right?  What that means is that you are way slower and less efficient and way more stupid if you aren’t getting enough sleep.  And that’s just talking about getting things done.

50 years of sleep research also shows us that if you are consistently not getting enough sleep, your cognitive abilities decline, your creativity goes down, your stress goes up, you make more bad decisions, and your ability to handle conflict and setbacks and bounce back into happiness and positivity goes to pot.

I don’t know about you but that sounds like it sucks- because it does.
